Lostwithiel Preschool Playgroup has secured a £181305 grant to build new premises.  The cash means there will be scope for many more activities at the town primary school site on Bodmin Hill.  The playgroup - celebrating it's 41st year - is currently housed in the Community Centre and is registered to care for 20 children from 2&1/2 to 5 years old.

While it has had a long and happy relationship with the Community Centre legislation for preschools has changed significantly.  The need for a properly designed, designated space with freeflow access to outdoor play and activities prompted the playgroup's managing committee to submit an application to Cornwall Council's Early Years Capital Grant Fund in September 2009.   After a complicated process involving the collation of supporting information, in March it was announced that the full grant had been awarded.

Debbie Peareth, chair of the managing committee said: "Everyone involved is absolutely delighted.  From the playgroup's point of view being on the school site will allow much more integration with the school reception stage, thus easing the transition for the children".
The building itself will be zoned to allow for different activities - including wet and messy play - and the large outside space will make use of the sloping site to create areal adventure playground, including space for growing flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Carolyn Huxley, headteacher of Lostwithiel School said: "The whole school community is excited that this project can now get underway.  We welcome Lostwithiel Preschool Playgroup to a collaboration whihc, together with our school will add to the excellence of Foundation Stage learning."

Local architect Chris Jones will project manage the build which will incorporate some sustainable features including solar heating and a part-sedum roof.

It is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year and the first pupils will start at the beginning of the first new term of 2011.

Morning and afternoon sessions will be on offer and government funding is available for the over 3's.  Playleader Amanda Pyne will be supported by 4 Play Assistants.  For more information call Amanda on 07796 555 796.
